Physical Education
At Sir John Leman you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting activities but most importantly you will learn to lead a healthy and active lifestyle which will benefit you as you move through life.
The Physical Education Department offers excellent facilities. In addition to extensive fields, Sports Hall, astroturf, 3G pitch, gymnasium, a squash court and a fitness suite. Opportunities exist for students to enjoy a range of sporting activities throughout the curriculum. There are extra curricular opportunities for netball, football, rugby, hockey, basketball, rounders, athletics, and tennis. There are also annual events in activities such as trampolining, swimming, cross country and table tennis.
What is it about?
You will learn and develop your understanding of the theoretical aspects of Physical Education and Sport and improve your sporting performance through acquiring and developing practical skills.
What sort of work is done?
Theory lessons to cover work on the following areas:
- Health and fitness
- Skeletal and muscular systems
- Circulatory and respiratory systems
- Sponsorship and media
- Drugs in sportP
Practical lessons that will develop your skills and understanding in various sports to include: badminton, trampolining, basketball, football, hockey, netball, athletics and cricket.
How is it examined?
- Two 1 hour 15 minutes theory papers at the end of the course which is 60% of the final grade.
- Assessed in 3 practical sports worth 40% of the final grade (1 individual sport, 1 team sport and another)The qualification is equivalent to 1 GCSE.
Accompanying the theory lessons there will be a regular homework usually through extended learning work book.
How important is coursework?
Coursework is extremely important. You are assessed in three sports which need to be practiced regularly. You are expected to do at least two extracurricular sports club a week to improve your coursework grade. You will also have to do a written piece of coursework, analysing your own performance.
What Qualifications will I get? What could it lead to?
- AQA Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Physical Education
From this qualification you may continue to study A-Level PE or a Level 3 Diploma in Sports. You may also get involved with specific sports clubs via apprenticeships and voluntary work experiences.
Career Directions could include:
Teaching, Analysing Performance, Fitness Industry, Coaching, Instructing, Sports Psychology, Physiotherapy or Dietician.
