The intent of the Spanish Curriculum

In the Sir John Leman Languages Faculty, we are passionate about broadening our students’ horizons and fostering confidence and enthusiasm for language learning. The Spanish curriculum at Sir John Leman High School has been created with the intention of building a strong foundation in both language skills and cultural understanding.

Our KS3 Spanish curriculum aims to develop core language skills so that students can listen, speak, read and write in Spanish with increasing accuracy and fluency. Our curriculum is designed in such a way that vocabulary and grammar are introduced and systematically revisited so that students can retrieve and manipulate language effectively.

KS3 Spanish lessons also provide the opportunity to develop exam skills such as dictation, reading aloud, translation and extended writing so that students are confident, capable learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their Spanish language learning journey.

How is the Spanish Curriculum implemented?

The KS3 Spanish curriculum broadly follows the Claro course of study, beginning with Claro 1 in Year 7 and progressing to Claro 2 by Year 9. The vocabulary and grammar covered within this programme of study provide students with a strong foundation, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for success at GCSE.

The impact of the Spanish Curriculum at the end of Key Stage 3

Students finish their KS3 Spanish curriculum at Sir John Leman High School as more confident, curious and capable language learners. By the end of Year 9 our students have the skills, knowledge and experience to make an informed decision about pursuing their Spanish studies at GCSE and will have attained a level of competence that allows them to make a positive start to the GCSE course. Our KS3 Spanish curriculum leaves students knowing more about the wider world around them and hopefully equips them with the desire to explore it further, whether that be through language learning, travel or future careers.

How is it assessed?

Classes in KS3 are set by ability; in Year 7 setting is based on prior attainment at KS2, Year 8 and 9 classes are then set based on performance in Spanish assessments throughout the year. Students undertake a Mid-Year and End of Year assessment in Spanish.
