Reading Interventions
We use the insights from the NGRT tests to identify students who would benefit from additional support to improve their reading. The main reading intervention programmes we use are Reading Plus and Thinking Reading.
Students who are not yet working at the level expected for their age may be enrolled on the Reading Plus intervention programme. This is a personalised online learning system overseen by our dedicated team of trained Reading Mentors. We have seen really impressive results for students who engage with the programme. The Reading Plus programme supports students with their reading in the following ways:
- Reading Practice - the programme adjusts text difficulty and length based on individual reading ability.
- Fluency Development - it helps students to develop reading speed and stamina by training eye movements.
- Comprehension & Vocabulary - includes questions and vocabulary tasks to strengthen understanding.
- Student Engagement - students read interesting texts to help boost their motivation.
- Real-Time Data - our Reading Mentors will be provided with up-to-date reports to guide targeted instruction.
If involved in Reading Plus, your child will already have received information about how to access the platform. Students can log in from home and complete additional tasks and you can view the progress they are making.

At Sir John Leman High School, we are delighted to be able to offer the Thinking Reading programme to students who are in need of the most support to make progress. Thinking Reading is an individually tailored, one-to-one intervention programme. Students work closely with one of our trained Reading Mentors in regular 30 minute reading lessons.
The Thinking Reading programme supports students with their reading in the following ways:
- Develop their decoding and word reading accuracy
- Help to improve their understanding of what they are reading through talk and questioning
- Spelling practice
Thinking Reading has proven success with secondary school students and is able to make rapid progress over a relatively short space of time.
